Car Insurance. It’s Getting Increasingly Expensive When You’re Elderly.

There were 550 serious accidents last year where the driver was over aged 70 and where driver was either killed or badly hurt, reports the Institute of Advanced Motoring . That statistic represents 8% of the national total of 7,035 similar accidents. That means that the over 70’s’s have more, very serious accidents per mile than any other sector of the population. This view is supported by the Association of British Insurers whose research shows that drivers aged over 70 are 13% more likely claim on their insurance than the drivers aged between 40 and 50.

As the number of elderly drivers will double during the next ten years, this represents a problem for elderly drivers and their families – not to mention the insurance industry, police and indeed all of the emergency services!

You can probably predict the response from the insurance industry. Many insurance companies already reckon that drivers over 80 are as high a risk as the under 25’s – and charge premiums to match! Some are even progressively loading premiums once the driver reaches 60. Then at 70, you’ll find that many insurance simply refuse to offer cover. Norwich Union and Esure won’t quote after 70 and by the time the driver reaches 80, the field narrows to specialised insurers who insure elderly drivers. Help the Aged and Age Concern both market policies that have no upper maximum age. Cornhill only accepts new policyholders up to 84 but if you’ve been insured by them for a few years, there’s no upper age limit. RIAS and Saga are also pleased to consider older drivers.

As the price of car insurance is based on historical claims experience, a 75 year old male driver can expect to pay at least 33% more than if he were aged 50. By the time the driver reaches 80 the premiums hit boy racer levels! So if you’re in your early 50’s keep smiling at the lowest premiums you’ll ever experience – they won’t last forever!

And the fairer sex fare even worse. Whilst younger women are renowned for their safe driving, they become more accident-prone as they get older. Whereas male drivers improve with age. (Where have we heard that before!) As a result, elderly women drivers pay the highest rates for car insurance.

It’s a biological fact that eyesight and reaction times worsen as age creeps on. And with traffic becoming heavier and road networks ever more complex, elderly drivers can more easily become disorientated and confused. Even a fraction of a second’s delay can make the difference between an accident and a near miss. Insurers are reacting by insisting that more elderly drivers take a medical before agreeing to provide insurance. The best advice is to build up a no claims record and as soon as possible and buy No Claims Protection. This protection cost a bit more but it’s well worth the money. Then make sure you pay for any small bumps yourself.

But there are some simple steps that older drivers, and indeed all drivers, can take to reduce the likelihood of them having an accident and thereby making themselves more insurable. It’s often more about those little things and being alert to likely problems. For example, car parks are a breeding ground for small accidents. Knowing that take more care. Before you get back into your car, walk round it to see how much room you’ve got. Then edge out carefully making sure that other drivers in the car park aren’t driving into the area you’re moving into. Then, if advancing years has stiffened you neck and all-round visibility is a bit more difficult, take special care at junctions and when reversing. Remember to move you head and swivel your shoulders – that way you’ll increase your sweep of vision.

Many of the policies for older motorists contain special provisions designed to assist them. On Saga’s policy for example, ex company car drivers can use any no claims record they’d built up and if a couple are insured and the main driver decides to quit driving, then the spouse can take over the no claims record. Other policies also provide full insurance cover for anyone who takes over driving in an emergency. Cornhill will even payout £250 if the DVLA stops you from driving for health isues associated with age.

In moves to diminish the numbers of accidents involving the elderly, the UK Government is investigating the issue of deteriorating health amongst elderly drivers. It seems to be considering the idea of obligatory health checks for elderly motorists. At the same time some local councils are introducing initiatives of their own. Torbay council has launched a scheme to encourage families and GP’s to take more responsibility for encouraging elderly drivers who are not really fit drive, to give up. A road safety spokesperson for Torbay council said, “The problem is that the elderly can’t always see themselves when it’s really time to give up driving so those closest to them must take responsibility for that.”

In the meantime, a survey carried out by the Institute of Advanced Motorists confirms that older motorists are aware that they represent an increased accident risk. Seven out of ten older drivers surveyed said they would like to take a refresher course for motorway driving skills and six out of ten wanted to improve their performance at junctions and on unlit roads. In response to these issues, the Institute has extended its advanced tests to older non-members to encourage them to improve and build up confidence. The tests also help spot any serious problems that should encourage the driver pack up driving.

Proton Satria Neo video road test

Monday, August 9th, 2010

This is a sporty little hatchback with a lot going for it, not least its looks and Lotus-tuned chassis which make it good fun to drive. Itâs well equipped and the 1.6 litre engine has enough go in it to please the sort of buyer it will attract As you may know, Proton bought Lotus in 2003 which gave it access to some of the worldâs finest chassis tuning engineers and the results shine through in the Satria Neo. Show it a series of twisty bends and it will put a grin on your face like few other hatchbacks. It handles very well indeed yet also rides well, firm but nicely composed over bumps. Certainly the chassis is the carâs strongest suit. As the `neoâ part of the name suggests, this is a revised version of the car and among the improvements has been a programme to make is more refined and quieter on the road. There is a choice of two engines, a 1.3 or 1.6 with the bigger one also being available with the option of an automatic gearbox. I had the 1.6 and itâs reasonably potent with 111 bhp Still and all I did like the Proton. The styling works for me and it seems for others too. At the front there is a distinctive headlamp shape which Proton refers to as `tiger eyeâ projector lamps, the alloy wheels sit under flared arches and at the back the exhaust tailpipe pokes out in the middle of the valence. Quite a few people asked me what it was and seemed surprised when I said Proton The cabin is a little bit small and I found headroom to be quite restricted but the car is well

Thought the viewing of this enjoyable series, I kept thinking to myself that this was “James Bond with a Library Card”. And I knew thought it would be great to see how many James Bond trailers have been made to the series. Much too my surprise I searched the database and found none. While I usually have a backlog of 3 or 4 amv ideas, I decided too push back my future projects and just do a quick little trailer. ROD to a James Bond trailer seemed like a great idea, especially since a new James Bond picture was about to premier. While I could have used “Die Another Day” trailer/teaser audio for the parody, I luckily decided to look at some older Bond films to see if I could find something better. When I stumbled upon the “Tomorrow Never Dies” trailer, I knew that this was the source material for my little ROD trailer. While not perfect, I found the trailer, and particularly the ending, to be perfectly suited for a joke at Pokemon’s expense. The trailer audio did need some work though. First, I replaced the introduction “Bond, James Bond” with audio from the teaser, which I found to be a little more ironic ^_^. Regretfully, I also had to remove the sequence between Q and Bond. This scene involved Q and Bond discussing the Insurance needs of Bond’s new BMW, spliced with scenes that

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

questions from Randy : car registration in Canada … HELP!? I drove my car to Canada from NY in April last year. Its been ongoing saga here (not registered smog time the check engine light problems, twice the unemployed, etc.) and I are all ready to include it here. The problem is when I moved here, I was unemployed for about a month goes off and I let my insurance for 10 days. NY wanted me to send my records in to them for 10 days and then they get a penalty for no insurance for the time. Of course I could not do when I’m on the other side of the country. Now I will register my car properly if I is finite smog, but my NY registration suspended! To make it worse, I find my registration certificate? I had a problem registering? Will they take my car? What should I do? PS – I did it this morning smogged and they sent my results that I went to the DMV … NY with my license plate! best answer:

Q&A: Saga continues of neighbor’s tree falling on our cars – totalling them?

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Issues tsalk , Saga will fall into the neighbor’s tree on our cars more – a total of them? OK. The saga continues. 3 weeks ago, my neighbor’s dead tree left into the parking lot in the house we rent a total of both my and my husband’s car. My landlady told her insurance adjuster came out and … He took one look at him and said, oh no, it is their responsibility. There is obviously a dead tree. The adjustment was called the neighbors and their insurance carrier and then told you so. Your insurance adjustment was mandag.Hun came from last very sweet and has a written statement from us with all details about the tree. She took many pictures. She told us that they pay their recommendation to the carrier, the claim, but she could not promise that it was what she wanted, showed her gøre.Vi tree. It is clearly a dead tree and you can see where they have taken for timber in the past. It is aftalt.Jeg never treated for this. If the adjustment to pay, says the insurance will pay in the rule? The tree is then “Y” s off. Neighbors at a time went the left leg of the Y. They left the right leg, and this is what came on our cars. They also had a sheet over their garage under this tree for every four years we have lived in the house. You can see where a large branch was either back or put on the garage. We would have been asked if it might branch fell in the past and damaged their garage.så serve them to “constructive” notice. My hostess with the neighbors together to take down two trees in the front yard, like 6-8 years old. It gives the adjuster canceled check to prove it. She claimed that during the conversation she spoke with the neighbors on the other trees and neighbor told her that they were about to take all the trees. Of course neighbor is dead now …… Any ideas? We told the adjuster that we have a lawyer, whom we had consulted about personally and that he told us not wait for the insurance process, but just go ahead and file. That is the truth. But she said you were a ceiling of 000 €. I smiled and said softly, not really, because each individual vehicle registered with us. Then we would be willing to submit two separate claims. They asked if we wanted to put this in our written statement, and I said no, but you should have in the file note that in reality lawyer agreed to come and ask us to court. I told her lawyer that I said before I filed any complaints, I wanted to give insurers a chance to take care dette.Hun, said that ultimately we can not land on file and go do dishes and so would the companies by the end splitting of the claim. But she made it clear that the recommendation would be to pay for them. Crossing my fingers. Best Answer learn:

Can a family man with Salary RM3,000 survive in Malaysia? What do you think of this?

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Question by daniel*wm: Can a family man with Salary RM3,000 survive in Malaysia? What do you think of this?
Let’s do some simple calculations here.

In Malaysia , the average family income is RM3,000 /month
(where father works, mother doesn’t).

I understand there are many families whose
monthly income does not reach RM3,000,
but, to make things simple,
let’s take RM3,000 as the figure. Ok lah, right?

Okay, let’s start rolling with a family which has
Papa, Mama, 1 daughter and 1 son. Ngam-ngam ….

Calculation starts…

Electricity and water bill: RM100
(No air-con, No home theatre, No water heater … ok?)

Phone bill ( Telekom): RM100

Meals for a happy family: RM775
(3 meals on RM25/day, RM25 for 4 persons…?)

Papa makan / teh-tarik during working hrs: RM155
(RM5/day, RM5 … can eat what?)

Car repayment: RM400
(A proton saga aeroback, 7 yrs repayment)

Petrol (living in city, traffic-jam): RM300
(go to work, bring son to school,
only can afford one car running)

Insurance: RM650
(kids, wife and myself)

House repayment: RM750
(low cost housing repayment for 30 yrs,
retired still have to work to pay!)

Tuition: RM80
(got that cheap meh? i don’t think so)

Older children pocket money @ school: RM20
(RM1/day, eat bread?)

School fees: RM30
(enough ah?)

School books and etc: RM100
(always got extra to pay in school)

Younger children milk powder: RM50
(cannot have the DHA, BHA, PHA one, expensive)

Miscellaneous: RM100
(shampoo, rice, sauce, toilet paper)

Oh wait!!! I have to stop here, so…
No Astro,
no movie @ cinema,
no DVD,
no CD,
no online,
cannot KFC,
cannot McDonald,
cannot go Park walk during weekend (petrol expensive),
no chit chat on phone with grandparents, and etc…

Let’s use a calculator to total up… WALAO EH! Shit! RM3,610 already…

EPF belum potong, income tax lagi……..oledi RM3,610 ….

How to survive lah tuan-tuan dan puan-puan sekalian ???

Our Deputy Prime Minister asked us to change lifestyle?

How to change? Don’t eat? Don’t work? Don’t send children to school and study?

I called several times and been promised that no more cr * p mail would be sent. This morning started again after a break of about 6 months. Has anyone been able to stop the things they send out? I used it again to win “” I am with the mail settings also registered, but it makes no difference. I have no policy or vacation or anything else with them – I was just stupid enough to ask for a car insurance offer at one time.

Many times when we buy insurance, we merely just pay for the policy and rarely think twice. In many cases a periodic review of your policy may reveal some benefits and discounts that will decrease your monthly insurance premiums. One of these circumstances is your driving experience. The Saga car insurance company is dedicated to providing quality coverage for those that have exhibited an outstanding driving record. Saga car insurance is the leader in UK-based car insurance for the over 50 crowd and they reflect this dedication in their offerings to their consumers. In a recent company release, Saga car insurance stated “we believe that drivers over 50 make fewer claims on their car insurance then those under 50, and we aim to reflect this in your premium and that of the million plus drivers already insured with Saga car insurance. “In addition to their over 50 special benefits, Saga car insurance also offers motorists their discounted Saga Breakdown Assistance program, to assist you in case your car should breakdown or be involved in an accident on the road. They offer five levels of coverage from standard roadside assistance to full European-wide coverage. Areas of coverage include tire repair service, a national recovery in case you need a tow, temporary auto when your is in the garage and of course, roadside repair assitance. Saga car insurance also advocates their unprecedented claims service as one of the best in the UK, with an extremely high 99% customer satisfaction rating. Saga car insurance also has a 24 hour claims hotline available 7 days a week. Their goal is to quickly handle your claims needs and get you back on the road, while excluding any further nuisance to you. Most of their claims service requires no forms to be filled out, and no written estimate hassles, further expediting your claim. Multiple savings are obtainable by any driver with Saga car insurance; the most important is their online discount that will save you up to 20% off your first year of premiums. Applying online for your Saga car insurance policy is easy and takes less than a few minutes to secure a competitive quote. If renewing your insurance policy is in the near future, and you are an experienced driver over 50, the Saga car insurance company should be number one on your list. You worked hard to maintain an excellent driving record and Saga is working hard to reward you for it
